Layout of Thesis

The following instructions are made in order to standardise the layout of Thesis or Dissertation. Candidates need to comply with these instructions when submitting their postgraduate dissertation at Koya University. These instructions are written in three languages English, Kurdish and Arabic. Follow the instruction of your written thesis language. All introductory pages to a thesis should be paginated in Roman, while the body of the text with Arabic numerals. Please note that all writing in Arabic and Kurdish have to be in UNICODE writing only. Please do not bind your Thesis till you have your final approval from Postgraduate Affairs Office at Koya University. You will need to provide the final Thesis layout on a CD for assessment.


  1. A main cover will be prepared in the language of the research. See cover page layout.
  2. The first page is just a blank inside page. You do not need to write anything here. No numbering is needed. See cover page layout.
  3. The second page is an inside page version of the main language cover page of the Thesis/Dissertation. You will need to prepare translation into two remaining languages as applicable. If your research is in English, e.g., you will provide translations in Arabic and Kurdish. The translated pages will be placed at the appendix section at the end of the Thesis. This page will be numbered with Roman numeral (i). See cover page layout.
  4. The third page is allocated to your free notes. The applicant is free to write a relevant verse, proverb, or quotation etc on this page. This page will be numbered with Roman numeral (ii).
  5. The fourth page is allocated to a dedication page. You may use this page to dedicate your work to someone(s). If you wish you can leave this page blank. This page will be numbered with Roman numeral (iii).
  6. The fifth page is allocated to the thesis supervisor’s approval and the approval by the head of department and school. This page will be numbered with Roman numeral (iv). See cover page layout.
  7. The sixth page is allocated to the approval of viva examining committee and approval of the Faculty Council (Dean’s signature). This page will be numbered with Roman numeral (v). See cover page layout.
  8. The seventh page and as many of the following pages as necessary is/are the table of contents section. Follow the examples to layout your table of content clearly. The contents pages will be numbered with Roman numerals (vi, vii,viii ...etc). See cover page layout.
  9. The page after the table of contents page(s) is the Preface page which guides the reader how your publication is organised. This page will be numbered with Roman numeral (..., ix). Please see cover page layout.
  10. The following page is the Acknowledgements page, in which you may acknowledge and appreciate contribution by others to the applicant's work or the applicant's person while working on his/her thesis. 
  11. The Abstract of the thesis or dissertation may be prepared in the language of the research but the applicant will need to prepare translation into two remaining languages English, Arabic, Kurdish as applicable. The translated Abstracts will be placed at the appendix section at the end of the thesis.
  12. Pages after Abstract including the Appendix are the main body of the thesis. These pages will be numbered with Arabic numeral as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5,...etc. See the example.
  13. Please note the colour codes for the cover of Master and PhD Thesis based on the following table.
